The butterfly stool is a project that is based on Sori Yanagi’s original design. Yanagi’s butterfly stool, consisting of only two pieces of wood with a simple metal connector, gave me the sense of both fragility and strength. This version is a design experiment on the materiality of cardboard which is fragile yet can be made into something strong by taking advantage of its structure. I utilized the natural characteristics of cardboard, its two smooth outer faces sandwiching a wavy, fluted corrugation layer, and employed traditional glue-free joints to create stable tension. The structure will be weak if the applied weight is perpendicular to the fluted corrugation layer, but it will be strong if it is parallel. These inspirations and found principals naturally generated the form of the stool.
