The shape originates from “Man-ge-kyou (万華鏡)”, a Japanese optical kaleidoscope toy. It is a mirrored tube that reflects hundreds of colors which form different shapes. As the kaleidoscope is turned, the image changes randomly to create various patterns. When I was little I used to try to turn it in a way as to get the same pattern that I turned out before. But indeed, once a pattern disappeared it took ages to turn the same combination. Therefore, the dish represents the stationary kaleidoscope with various shapes to form patterns that I remembered from my childhood. It is a sauce dish and as different sauces are used, additional dishes are required, forming various larger patterns.
It is not an ash tray!
